Bible Passages on Monasticism

Matt. VIII, 21-22
And another of the disciples said to Him: Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father. But Jesus said to him: Follow me, and let the dead bury their dead.

Matt. IX, 9
…and Jesus saw a man sitting at the tax booth, named Matthew; and He said to him: Follow me. And he rose and followed Him.

Matt. X, 37
Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever does not take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

Matt. XII, 50
Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.

Matt. XVII, 2
And He was transfigured before them, and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, speaking with Him.

Matt. XVI, 24-26
Then Jesus said to His disciples: If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What would it profit a man if he gained the whole world and yet suffered harm in his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? (see also Lk. 9, 23ff.)

Matt. XIX, 29
Everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my name’s sake will receive a hundredfold and inherit eternal life.

Matt. XIX, 16-22
And behold, one came to Him and said: Master, what good thing must I do to have eternal life? But He said to him: Why do you ask me about the good? One is good. If you would enter into life, keep the commandments. He asked: Which? And Jesus said: You shall not kill, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not bear false witness, honor father and mother, and love your neighbor as yourself. The young man said: All these I have always kept. Jesus said to him: If you would be perfect, go, sell all that you have and give to the poor; you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me. When the young man heard this word, he went away sorrowful, for he had many possessions. (see also Mk. 10 and Lk. 18)

Matt. XXII, 29
Jesus answered and said to them: You err, and you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like the angels in heaven.

Lk. IX, 27
But I tell you truly, some of those standing here will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.

Lk. XIV, 25-26
A great crowd went with Him; and He turned and said to them: If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. (“Hate” is here a sharpened expression; it is about giving up all earthly attachments in order to become truly free for God.)

Lk. XX, 34
…the children of this world marry and are given in marriage. But those who are counted worthy to attain that world and the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. For they can no longer die; they are equal to the angels and are children of God, being children of the resurrection.

Jn. III, 3ff.
Unless one is born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God….What is born of the flesh is flesh. What is born of the Spirit is spirit….The wind blows where it wills, and you hear its sound, but you do not know whence it comes and whither it goes. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.

Jn. XVII, 21
…that they may all be one, just as You, Father, are in me and I in You, so they too may be one… (This is by no means about institutional unity, but rather about personal mystical union with God. See the continuation.)

Jn. XXI, 25
There are also many other things that Jesus did; were they written one by one, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would have to be written.

Eph. VI, 10ff.
Therefore gain strength in the Lord and in the dominion of His power. Put on the armor of God, that you may be able to withstand the methods of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the primal powers, against the powers of darkness that rule this world, against the spirits of wickedness in the realms beneath the heavens.

1 Jn. II, 15ff.
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the desire of the flesh and of the eyes and the pride of life, is not from the Father but from the world. And the world passes away with its desire. But whoever does the will of God abides forever.

Rev. II, 7
He who has ears, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches: To him who overcomes I will give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.

Rev. II, 11
… He who overcomes will not be harmed by the second death.

Rev. II, 17ff.
… To him who overcomes I will give the hidden manna, and a white stone, and on the white stone a new name written, which no one knows except the one who receives it.

Rev. III, 5-6
He who overcomes will be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before my Father and before His angels. He who has ears, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

Rev. III, 12ff.
He who overcomes, I will make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go out no more; and I will write upon him the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down from heaven from my God, and my own new name.

Rev. XIV, 3ff.
And no one could learn the song except the hundred and forty-four thousand who had been redeemed from the earth. These are they who have not defiled themselves with women; they are virginal, who follow the Lamb wherever He goes. These have been redeemed from mankind as firstfruits, an offering, for God and the Lamb.
