Holy Trinity

The Holy Trinity Monastery in Buchhagen, Weserbergland, was founded in 1990 by Elder Johannes. It is the home of the first German Orthodox monastic community and since 1993 has been an abbey of the Bulgarian Orthodox Patriarchate. Monastic life follows the tradition of the Holy Mountain of Athos.

Notenblatt

The monks are men dedicated to God who live in holy obedience with their elder. The heart of monasticism is the all-surpassing love of God and complete devotion to Him, which finds expression in the monastic total offering. In the mysterious relationship between God and man, in prayer, work, and study, the life of sanctification grows.

A major focus lies in the development and cultivation of German-language Orthodox church chant.

The monastery is economically self-supporting. Organic gardening, household work, translation work, artistic and other activities are as much a part of life as the prayer of the heart, worship, and sacred chant.

Construction of the Monastery Church

At last the time has come. The church is visibly taking shape. Together with volunteer helpers, the fathers themselves work as praying masons and builders. In its planning, the elder draws on the earliest German sacred architecture, which was closely connected with the Byzantine tradition. In the spirit of Holy Tradition, and through the application of musically natural proportions, a sacred space of extraordinary harmony and beauty is coming into being here.

The Orthodox service is mystagogy, a leading into the eternal mystery. One stands upright before God, spiritually and bodily. For this reason there are no chairs in the church. Through hearing and seeing, sacred gestures (the sign of the cross, bows, prostrations), and antiphonal chant, one takes part in the sacred event. Guidance for proper participation is available in the sanctuary.

If you are travelling from far away, it is advisable to call in advance, so that you do not happen to come on a day when the times are different.
